How do we make the TAMARACK Magazine? It's a long process but the end results are worth it. First we are split into partners and we conduct a few test interviews on teachers or classmates. Then we are given our interview subjects. It is up to us to arrange and conduct the interview and make sure that it is tape recorded properly. Committees are secected to help make the project run smoothly. These committees are: Coordinator, Layout, Photos, original artwork, Editing, and Cover & extra pages. From the taped interview we transcribe, word for word, the entire interview. This takes a long time. The transcript is then edited (removing the umms and ahhs and irrelevant information) and put into paragraphs. The first draft is edited, then edited again and the second draft is born. A title, pull quotes are selected from the text and the introduction is written. After more extensive editing the final draft is then sent to the interviewee to sign a waiver saying it's okay for us to publish the article. Once the article has been approved and any changes made the article is then put into three column format. Now the physical cutting and pasting of the layout begins. The article is laid out in tree columns, with the title, intro, pull quotes and pictures and captions included. This layout then goes to the layout committee who takes all the articles and lays them out and compiles the magazine. This is the finicky business because the articles don't always fit to the bottom of the page, or go over, so the layout committee has to change picture sizes and layout until the article fits. Once everyone is satisfied with the layout a copy of the magazine is sent to the printers. The printers look over the magazine, makes sure everything is okay with the file, photos are all there and then they send us as laser copy of the magazine. This is our last chance to find spelling mistakes and other errors. Once we are sure about the magazine it goes back to the printers and the printing begins. The magazine is now done and ready to be sold. A lot of hours put in by 20 high school students has paid off with a nationally acclaimed magazine. |
