    What is TAMARACK?
    A four credit integrated program that will fill your timetable for the second semester. You will have one teacher for the whole semester. A less structured learning environment- you will work outside the school on various projects in the community and the wilderness.

    Can I take TAMARACK?
    All students are welcome, provided you are:

    • a student in your third, fourth or fifth year of high school
    • a student in good standing
    • cooperative, responsible and willing to work as part of a group
    • interested in environmental issues
    • interested in learning more about the history of the area

    How much does it cost?
    There is a student fee to help cover some of the costs associated with the out-of-school components of the program, including extensive travel. We will also be doing some fundraising.

    What credits will we earn?

    • Earth and Space Science - Grade 12 University Preparation (SES4UP)
    • English - Grade 11 University Preparation (ENG3UP)
    • Healthy Active Living Education - Grade 12 Open (PAD4OP)
    • Physical Geography - Grade 11 University/College(GCF3MP)

    What will we be doing?

    • Extensive work in cultural journalism- interviewing, recording and writing local history, including the production and marketing of the TAMARACK Magazine
    • Field Studies, including an in-depth study and mapping of a lake
    • Four week-long outdoor trips involving winter camping, snowshoeing, orienteering, shelter construction, backpacking, cycling, rockclimbing and canoeing
    • The integration of outdoor recreation with literature and environmental studies

    TAMARACK students will have the opportunity to:

    • develop organizational and leadership skills
    • challenge themselves and experience personal growth
    • develop a healthy environmental ethic and a positive attitude towards nature
    • practise outdoor recreation skills
    • gain a greater appreciation and understanding of Ottawa Valley history

    You Should Know:
    The TAMARACK class works outside the school often and for periods of time, away from the Deep River area. Participation in extracurricular activities and part-time jobs must work around the TAMARACK schedule.
